I missed the deadline for registering my exhibit for the Seattle Dollhouse Miniature Show that is going this weekend. I was supposed to register “before March 1st, 2017 – no exceptions!” While it was tempting to email the owner to ask for an exception, I refrained, I think the only person who would find that funny is me. Lol!
So, I made it anyway.
I’ve been collecting different mosses from around our property for a moss-study for the Miniature Garden Society and I couldn’t resist creating this second version of Myown State Park in 1/144th scale. I made the first version for my first display for the Northwest Flower and Garden Show in 2004, you can see it here at the top of the page.
I’ve also written about the use of that “new” fairy garden moss that they are selling in the garden centers and big-box stores that is totally fake and makes a moldy-mess in the living miniature gardens, Miniature Gardening: What They Won’t But I Will

When i first read this, I thought it said 1:144 scale. i was thinking I would need a microscope to see it!
I loved it ? I have no words to describe how pretty and whimsical they are. I sometimes moss reading your blogs (thanks to my hectic schedule) but whenever I drop in I always fall in love with your faury gardens. Do you have any mini buddha garden or mini totoro garden ? If yes please with us in your next blog. Have a fun day gardening????

They’re lovely…I have to try miniature moss gardening soon. Thanks for sharing:)
I love it. Especially the longer looking moss in the 2nd picture.
It’s February here in the western side of the Sierra Nevada foothills. It stays green year around so rather than snow and ice we have rain and lots of different kinds of moss because of the dampness. Some is on the ground and some is growing on the trees.
Could I use that moss in a fairy garden? How will I plant it? Scoop it up from the ground and lay it on the organic potting mix? Should I include some of the soil it is in?
Janit, you need to come here for a visit (we’re only a few miles from the entrance to Yosemite) and help me set up several miniature gardens.
Thanks so much.

Hi Anne!! Apologies for missing this last week. I would try a couple of different types of moss, a couple of different ways. In general, the moss you find growing on wood, “plant” that on wood. If you want to grow moss on soil, gather it from the soil, for mossy rocks, harvest the moss from rocks or the pavement. I would try to keep as much of the soil that comes with it to try to grow it elsewhere – that way the shallow roots remain it the soil that you know it already likes to grow in. Note that moss absorbs moisture from its leaves so if it’s not going well, try misting it more often. Don’t invest too much time in it until you know what combination works for you.
And yes. Teleport me now. I’m so there! Lol! It sounds like a lovely part of the world you live in! – J.
Love the new look. I also love your pioneering in the miniature world. I (and my wife) have done miniature furniture and have shown at the Seattle show, years ago (80’s). We used to be known as Little Somethings. We both did 1/12th furniture and my wife did the insane half inch scale.
I must say that you have a wonderful eye for scale!

Aw thank you Tom! I’ve tried to make my own furniture, and that is not too easy! Thank you for your kudos and support, Tom, I do appreciate it! :o)
