Why the Mini Patio Mix Works
The Mini Patio Mix system revolutionizes miniature patio building with its unique dry-assembly approach. Unlike traditional methods that require you to work quickly with wet materials, our specially formulated mix lets you:
- Take your time with design – Position and reposition stones until your pattern is perfect
- Make adjustments easily – No rushing to beat drying time means you can be as creative as you want
- Achieve professional results – The dry system prevents the lumpy, uneven surfaces that plague other methods
- Work with any material – Whether you’re using tiles, marble, stone, pebbles, or mini bricks, the mix adapts perfectly
- Get it right the first time – Test, adjust, and perfect your layout before the final misting locks everything in place
This is where the magic happens – you have plenty of time and only when you’re completely satisfied with your design and ready to mist. This foolproof approach means even beginners can create stunning, professional-looking patios that everyone can relate to as a true garden in miniature.

What You’ll Need
Before you begin, gather these materials:
- Your miniature garden, planted
- Mini Patio Mix Kit from Two Green Thumbs
- Your choice of patio material (tiles, stones, marble, etc. – see more ideas here.)
- Scissors
- Spray mister
- Spoon (helpful for detail work)
- Garden border (included in kit)
- Wooden skewers (included in kit)
- Fine sand (included in kit)

Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Prepare Your Patio Area
Start with completely dry soil in your patio area. Press the soil down gently and flatten it out to create an even surface. Your patio area should be about 1 inch deep when complete.
2. Install the Garden Border
Unfurl the garden border that comes with your kit. Measure it carefully to fit the sides of your pot or garden area, then cut it to size with scissors.
For curved areas, cut the wooden skewers in half and use them to pin the border against the garden bed ledge. This will keep everything securely in place while you work on the rest of your patio.
3. Add the Miniature Sand Base Layer
Pour a ¼-inch layer of the miniature sand (included in your kit) into the patio area. This creates a buffer between the Mix and the soil and will add to the thickness of the patio.
4. Layer the Mini Patio Mix
Pour a ½-inch layer of the Mini Patio Mix on top of the sand layer. Using the spoon, gently push the mix into all corners and sides of your patio area. Don’t worry about making it perfect at this stage – you’ll have time to adjust.

5. Design Your Patio Pattern
This is the fun part where creativity meets precision. This step requires a little patience, but the results are worth it:
- Measure your patio stones against the area for proper sizing
- Test fit different arrangements before committing
- Cut, snip, or peel off pieces of stone to fit edges perfectly
- Work on your design until you’re completely satisfied
Want to mix and match your stone and tile? Or make a path of different colored stone through the middle of the wee patio? The beauty of the Mini Patio Mix system is that everything goes together dry, giving you plenty of time to create the perfect mosaic pattern.
6. Fill in the Details
Work systematically through the patio area from one side to the next, filling gaps with smaller stones trying different stones to fit the tight spots. All stones should sit at the same level to create a flat surface for a professional appearance.
If you find your stones aren’t going together nicely, take them all out and start again by filling the corners of your design first, then figure out where to place the middle stones.
Once your patio stones are positioned, gently pat them down to ensure they are level with each other to create a flat surface.
7. Secure with Additional Mix
Add more Mini Patio Mix around the stones, sweeping it gently between gaps and into corners and edges. Be careful not to move any of the stones. Use the end of a skewer to adjust the placement if needed.
Important tip: When brushing off excess material, use your hand rather than a dry brush. A brush removes too much material and can create an uneven, lumpy surface that won’t properly support your miniature accessories. (Fairy gardeners, make sure your patio or pathway is level, you don’t want your fairies to twist an ankle. :o)

8. The Critical Misting Step
Clean up your work area while everything is still dry – you’re about to introduce water, and cleanup becomes much messier afterward.
Set your spray mister to the finest mist setting and test it first to make sure you have the right kind of spray. Mist your patio from side to side, but stop immediately when you see water starting to pool on the surface. This activates the binding properties of the Mini Patio Mix without over-saturating it.
Crucial: Don’t touch the patio surface at this point, as you’ll damage the texture and it won’t look “miniature.”
9. Final Touches
Allow the patio to dry for about an hour. Place a piece of plastic over it to slow down the drying process – the slower it cures, the stronger it will be. Once completely dry, you can sweep off any excess sand for a clean, finished appearance.
Completing Your Miniature Scene
Congratulations – you’ve just built a beautiful miniature patio! Now it’s time to bring your scene to life with accessories. Remember, it’s the accessories that determine the scale of your miniature garden, not the plants themselves. Choose items that complement your garden style and create your perfect tiny outdoor living space.
